The much anticipated 60 kilometre walk returns for its second year

OTTAWA, May 28 - A dramatic statement in the fight against breast cancer will be made this weekend as women and men unite in the streets of Ottawa to walk 60 kilometres in a heroic commitment to the fight against breast cancer. This weekend journey will be the second Weekend to End Breast Cancer event to raise funds for breast cancer research, treatment and care in Eastern Ontario through the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation.

After Opening Ceremonies early Saturday morning, Walkers will set off on a two-day, walk that winds its way through the city neighbourhoods, complete with a night of camping. It’s a weekend of hope, as participants celebrate survivors, honour lives lost, and help raise millions of dollars for the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation to assist breast cancer patients and their families.

"My sister-in-law was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. She had no family history and just before her diagnosis, had learned that she was pregnant" says Elizabeth Cousineau, walker in the event. "Because of the disease, she had to terminate her pregnancy and is presently undergoing treatments. Breast cancer turned her life (and the life of her family) upside down. I am walking, along with my other sister-in-law, to ensure a brighter future for those touched by this terrible illness."

Linda Eagen, President & CEO of the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation and event participant, is thrilled to have the event in Ottawa for a second time. “Statistically speaking, one in 9 Canadian women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime and one in 27 Canadian women will die of the disease. That is an alarming number and proceeds from The Weekend to End Breast Cancer event continues to impact our progress by funding critical research and care initiatives.”

“Proceeds from The Weekend to End Breast Cancer event have enabled us to fund a new molecular analysis laboratory, expand our services and continue to provide the best possible cancer care across Eastern Ontario,” says Dr. Shail Verma, Medical Oncologist with the Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre. “Researchers and clinicians alike are grateful for the tremendous community support that this event generates, enabling us to continue our relentless efforts against this disease”.
